Cashew Nut Shells – Biofuel from Cashew Industry By-products

Xưởng ép vỏ điều
Vietnam is one of the world’s largest exporters of cashews. The process of extracting kernels generates a significant amount of cashew shells. After the extraction of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), the remaining pressed shell residue serves as a biomass fuel characterized by high, stable calorific value—a fuel that is increasingly favored in industrial applications.

1. What is cashew residue?

In the cashew processing workflow, after shelling and extracting the kernels, the peels are sent to be pressed for oil—a highly valuable industrial raw material. The residue remaining after oil extraction is Cashew nut residue—an agricultural by-product that might seem like waste, but is actually highly effective as fuel.

With an average calorific value exceeding 4,600 kcal/kg and an ash content of less than 3%, oil-pressed cashew nut residue has become one of the most cost-effective and high-performance biomass fuels on the market.

2. Advantages of cashew nut shells as boiler fuel

Cashew Nut Shells
  • High calorific value – operational cost savings: Burning cashew nut shells generates intense heat and maintains stable boiler pressure.
  • Low ash content – furnace-friendly: Reduces equipment cleaning and maintenance costs.
  • Low prices and abundant supply: As a leading cashew exporter, Vietnam ensures that the price of cashew residue remains stable and competitive.
  • Clean fuel – reducing CO₂ emissions: Cashew nut shells are a green fuel derived from agricultural waste, aligning with sustainable development goals and the Net Zero objective.

3. An Nguyen Phat’s cashew shell residue production capacity.

AN NGUYEN PHAT currently operates a cashew shell residue processing plant in Binh Phuoc, Vietnam, with a capacity of 6,500 tons per month, ensuring a stable supply and consistent quality for both domestic and international partners.

An Nguyen Phat currently supplies cashew residue to factories in Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, and Da Nang.
